Pregnancy Symptoms Week 1: Early Signs to Know

If you’re actively trying to conceive, every sensation in your body might suddenly seem significant. It’s common to ask: what are the pregnancy symptoms in week 1, and how can you tell the difference between early pregnancy signs and PMS?

At Bourn Hall UAE, we understand how emotional and uncertain this early stage can be. While most pregnancy symptoms don’t kick in until a few weeks after conception, some women do notice subtle changes very early on, even as early as week 1.

Here’s what to look out for in the first week of pregnancy, and what it might mean.

What Does “Week 1” of Pregnancy Actually Mean?

Before diving into the symptoms, it’s important to understand how pregnancy is dated. Week 1 of pregnancy typically starts on the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP), not from the day of conception.

This means that for most of week 1, you’re not technically pregnant yet. Ovulation (when the egg is released) usually occurs around day 14 of a 28-day cycle, and fertilisation happens shortly after. So, while it’s called “week 1,” you may still be in the pre-conception phase.

However, for women with irregular cycles, or those undergoing fertility treatment like IVF, tracking becomes more precise, and certain very early pregnancy symptoms may be noticeable.

Pregnancy Symptoms in Week 1: What You Might Feel

Although most classic pregnancy symptoms appear later, here are a few subtle signs some women report during the first week:

1. Mild Cramping or Abdominal Discomfort

As your body prepares for ovulation or implantation, you might feel mild, period-like cramps. Some women experience this as a dull ache or tightness in the lower abdomen.

2. Spotting or Light Bleeding

Known as implantation spotting, this usually occurs around 6 – 10 days after ovulation (technically closer to week 3 of pregnancy), but some women mistake it for an early period. It’s typically very light and pink or brown in colour.

3. Increased Fatigue

A sudden wave of tiredness or sleepiness can sometimes be an early sign of pregnancy. Rising progesterone levels and your body’s early preparations for supporting a pregnancy may leave you feeling unusually drained, even in the first few days.

4. Changes in Cervical Mucus

After conception, some women notice an increase in creamy or sticky cervical mucus. While not a definitive sign, it’s one of the early changes associated with hormonal shifts.

5. Mood Swings or Emotional Sensitivity

Feeling unusually emotional or irritable? That could be due to rising hormone levels—either from PMS or early pregnancy. The overlap makes it hard to distinguish at this stage, but many women report heightened emotions early on.

6. Bloating and Gas

Early pregnancy hormones can slow down digestion, causing mild bloating or gas. This is often mistaken for a normal premenstrual symptom.

7. Breast Tenderness

Sore, swollen, or heavy-feeling breasts can begin very early, even before a missed period. You may also notice darkening of the areolas or more visible veins on the chest.

When to Take a Pregnancy Test

Even if you’re noticing pregnancy symptoms in week 1, it’s too early for most home pregnancy tests to detect hCG, the pregnancy hormone. For the most accurate result:

  • Wait until at least the first day of your missed period, or
  • Take a blood test through your clinic, which can detect pregnancy earlier than urine tests.

While pregnancy symptoms in week 1 may be subtle, or even absent, it’s normal to pay close attention to your body in those first few days. But remember, every woman’s experience is different, and early symptoms are not a guarantee of pregnancy.
