What are fibroids?

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb. The growths are made up of muscle and fibrous tissue, and vary in size.

How do fibroids affect your fertility?

Many women are unaware that they have fibroids as often there are no symptoms. For those women who do experience symptoms, these can include:

  • Heavy and/or painful periods
  • Abdominal pain
  • Lower back pain
  • A frequent need to urinate
  • Constipation
  • Pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse
  • Complications caused by fibroids can cause infertility

How can fibroids be diagnosed and treated?

At Bourn Hall, we use pelvic imaging such as MRI and ultrasound scans to detect signs of fibroids. Other diagnostic techniques include:

Removal of fibroids is usually via a procedure called a myomectomy.
